Indian athletes and some British politicians have been agitating for Dow Chemical to withdraw from the £7 million sponsorship of the wrap on moral grounds because they claim the company has not adequately addressed compensation issues over the Bhopal disaster back in 1984, caused by Union Carbide, which Dow Chemical took over in 2001.

"It was highly unlikely that anyone would see the six panels and that decision not to exercise our rights in that regard was taken well before the issue of Bhopal came onto the radar screen," Hamilton said.

He said the company had become an Olympic sponsor to access more than £97 billion in new infrastructure spending at future Olympic Games generating incremental sales of £646 million over 10 years. It was also to highlight the company's involvement in sustainable products.

"We want to tell how Dow is more relevant to the world, what we do and how we do it," Hamilton said.

"We will be stressing solutions, how Dow is providing technology, innovations and solutions to the make the Olympics sustainable."
