The decision of American basketball player Becky Hammon to represent Russia in the 2008 Summer Olympics caused something of a scandal in her home country, with the US's then national basketball coach Anne Donovan suggesting she was "not a patriotic person". Hammon argued that she had not been asked to try out for the US team, and that it was her only opportunity "to fulfil my dream of playing in the Olympics".
